With this tour that follows roughly the course of the Red River from south of Kunming to the Vietnamese border you will be able to live a unique experience far from the beaten track of other Asia travellers.

Sample Itinerary


DAY 1: KUNMING ARRIVAL

Arrival at Kunming airport. Our guide will meet you in the arrival hall after the immigration formalities. Transfer to your hotel, where you will check-in before enjoying a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Kunming.

 

DAY 2: KUNMING - SHILIN - KUNMING  

[ B ]

ShilinBreakfast at the hotel. Half-day walking tour in Kunming city, where you will visit Yuantong Temple and the Flower & Bird market in the old town. At noon, private van transfer to Shilin (Stone Forest), a UNESCO listed site of remarkable karst topology, a grand geological sight that formed about 250 million years ago. Return to Kunming and overnight.

 

DAY 3: KUNMING - XINMENG - JIANSHUI

TuanshanIn the morning, drive to Jiashui via Tonghai. Xinmeng vilage, near Tonghai, is the only Mongol village in Yunnan, where the descendants of Kublai Khan's army still keep their own culture alive since the Yuan dynasty, while their language is different from the one spoken in contemporary Mongolia. You will then be transferred to Jianshui, a historic city dating back to the Han dynasty. You will visit Chaoyang Gate (the emblem of the city, built in 1389) and check-in at your hotel in the old town. You will then visit Tuanshan village, one of the few remaining intact cultural villages of the Qing Dynasty. Here you will be able to admire residential complexes built 600 years ago which have well reserved the characteristics and social and humanistic environment of the typical Southern Yunnan villages as well as 26 best preserved traditional folk houses and ancient buildings of the late Qing Dynasty. On the way back to Jianshui, you will stop at Shuanglong Bridge to admire sunset at this beautifully built 17-arches bridge. Overnight in Jianshui.

 

DAY 4: JIANSHUI - YUANYANG  

[ B ]

In the morning, you will discover the old town of Jianshui. Visit the Confucian temple, the second largest Confucian temple in China. Walk in the small cobbled lanes looking for old wells and architectural gems, visiting a local tofu workshops and tasting fresh soy milk or a tender tofu pudding. We will then take you for lunch to the Muslim quarter before taking the minivan to Yuanyang, renowned for the ethnic minority that inhabits the area, the Hani, and for the breathtaking rice terraces built by them over many decades. If time and weather permits, we will drive to Laohuzui (Tiger Mouth) to watch sunset over the terraced fields, a great photo opportunity. Overnight in Xinjie.

 

DAY 5: AROUND YUANYANG

YuanyangWeather permitting, you will get up early and transferred to watch the sunrise over one of the terraced fields, otherwise you will start your daily tour after breakfast. Minivan transfer to Qingkou (6km), where you will start the trekking among villages and terraced fields. The trekking ends in Aicun village, where your driver will be waiting for you to escort you back to Xinjie. Overnight in Xinjie.

 

DAY 6: YUANYANG – JINPING  

[ B , L ]

A scenic mountain drive will take you from the Yuanyang area to Jingping county, the area bordering with Northen Vietnam. Jinping is a fascinating place, left almost untouched by modern day tourism and home to numerous ethnic minorities, still arbed in their traditional dresses, such as the Red Head Yao, the Indigo Yao, the Hmong, the Manren, the Kucong, the Dai, the Hani, the Yi, etc. With the backdrop of lush jungle, banana plantations, rubber trees, spice fields and the winding Red River, amongst the most colourful markets in China take place here every day. You will be able to stop at villages en route to interact with the locals and get a glimpse of their lifestyles and traditions. Depending on the day of the week, we may also bump into a big market. Overnight at Jinping.

 

DAY 7: AROUND JINPING  

[ B , L ]

According to the lunar calendar or a fixed cycle, markets laternate every day in different places around Jinping town. Today we will visit a lively market, encounter local ethnic minorities and explore their villages, making for some unique opportunities to learn about their cultures and take some of the most unique and colourful photos of your holiday in Yunnan. Overnight in Jinping.

 

DAY 8: JINPING – MENGZI

MinoritiesDepending on the date, you may be able to visit another market on the way to Mengzi, a colonial town home of the "across-the-bridge" rice noodles. Visit Bi Se Zhai, the old railway station flourished during 1910 - 1940 on the Yunnan-Vietnam railway. Walk to a small exhibition at the old building of the first telegram and post office in Yunnan, then stroll around the lake until your dinner. Overnight in Mengzi.

 

DAY 9: MENGZI – KUNMING  

[ B ]

Morning stroll and breakfast at a local restaurant, then drive back to Kunming. Rest of the day free at leisure. For cultural activity lovers, we strongly recommend for this evening the "Dynamic Yunnan" show, which is a song and dance performance of the Yunnan ethnic minorities and would be a grand finale to the Life Along the Red River tour.

 

DAY 10: KUNMING DEPARTURE

After breakfast, time free at leisure until your transfer to the airport for onward flight.
