Itinerary

DAY 1: PAKSE – CHAMPASSAK – VAT PHOU

[ L , D ]

In the early morning depart from Pakse heading south aboard a local long tail riverboat to Champassak in time for a riverside lunch. After lunch enjoy a guided tour of the 10th century pre-Angkorian temple of Vat Phou. Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, Vat Phou is a spectacular pre-Angkorian temple that sits amidst the rice fields and waterways of southern Laos. The temple was constructed in three levels: the bottom level is focused on the baray (water reservoir) and promenade, the second level features quadrangular pavilions and galleries of carvings, and the top level is the sanctuary itself. The temple was built by the rulers of the Khmer empire before the construction of Angkor Wat. The temple served as the most important economic and political centre of the region and still is one of the Lao people’s most revered temples. After the tour, stop in Champassak to see some beautiful examples of French colonial architecture. Return to the boat for a relaxing cruise down-river, enjoying the tropical sunset on the deck. Dinner is served on board, while the boat docks for the night alongside a remote Laotian village. Overnight on board.

DAY 2: HUAY TOMO – OUM MUANG – KHONG ISLAND

[ B , L , D ]

Breakfast is served on board as you cruise to the village of Huay Tomo, where you will visit the spectacular hidden forest temple of Oum Muang. Rejoin the boat for lunch on board continuing a leisurely cruise further south to the “4,000 islands”. Stop and visit Ban Dua Tae, a traditional Laotian Village where the traditional way of life has not changed in centuries before continuing to Khong Island. The 4,000 islands is called “Siphandon” in Lao language. Siphandon is a unique breathtaking area along the Laos/Cambodian border. Here, the Mekong stretches over 14km wide and has literally thousands of islands. Enjoy dinner on board. Overnight on board.

DAY 3: KHONG ISLAND – KHONE PHAPHENG – PAKSE

[ B , L ]

Breakfast is served on the deck, while cruising to the small village of Ban Veuthong where we will board a small long-tail boat to Khone Island. Don Det and Don Khone are two very laidback islands near the border of Strung Treng Province in Cambodia. These quiet islands do not have any cars and electricity is only provided in the evening. The northern part of Don Det, close to the pier, has been developed as a destination for backpackers, while the southern part and Don Khone Island is very traditional with the locals reliant on coconut, kapok and bamboo farming. The islands played an important role during the French Colonial rule as they linked Laos to Cambodia and Southern Vietnam. To overpass the waterfalls, a railway and bridge were built, the perfect place to take your time and soak in the view. Take a long tail boat back to the main land for lunch. Here you can see colorful French colonial houses and an old customs post alongside a stone quay. After lunch take a minivan to the Khone Phapheng waterfall, close to the Cambodian border. Khone Phapheng are the highest and probably the most impressive waterfalls of the country. The local community has built a wooden hut for you to view these stunning falls. After your visit travel 2 hours overland back to Pakse, arriving in the afternoon at around 1500.
